I started to get serious about playing bass around the age of 20. I should of been studying a degree in civil engineering but became far more interested in music! I would consider myself to be self taught but did have some help from a couple of great (Nottingham based) local musicians during the first couple of years of playing. One was Gary Lewis, a local guitar tutor who instilled into me the value of learning music theory, and the other was David Shields, a great bass player who in the space of about 10 minutes showed me some right hand technique exercises that would stay with me to this day, over 10 years later. After 3 years of playing I moved to London and began auditioning as well as studying at 'Basstech' in North london. After a year I actually left my studies and began freelancing all over the U.K. and abroad.
Recently in 2010 I decided to pick up my studies again and completed a Bmus (Honours) Degree at the Institute Of Contemporary Music Performance in Kilburn. Here I had the fantastic opportunity to attend Masterclasses and get private tuition from the likes of Laurence Cottle and Janek Gwizdala. Since graduating I have been a busy freelance bass player/teacher playing with various shows and bands throughout the UK.
